When a loved one dies, their objects become small amulets, like relics, for those that mourn their death. A glove, a book, a pencil, their shoes…. Each thing the deceased touched throughout his or her life becomes something sacred. At some point during the mourning period, the family and loved ones of the deceased will have to put away these objects that are full of meaning, and confront their memories.

In Records and Photographs (Levyt ja valokuvat), a medium-length film by Pia Andell, one of these sacred objects is a camera. When 16-year-old Martta is cleaning out her grandfather’s house together with her mother, she decides to take with her some things which, initially, seem to be of no relevance. However, the camera she has taken hides one last film which hadn’t been developed, and this wonderful fact will turn Martta’s life around.

Pia Andell was born in Turku, Finland, in 1964. She studied Journalism at the University of Tampere and later graduated in Film Direction by the Helsinki University. Andell’s work in documentaries is well-known. Records and Photographs is her first fictional film.

Records and Photographs is part of the Official Section of the 9th edition of the International Medium-length Film Festival La Cabina that will be celebrated from the 3rd to the 13th of November at the Filmoteca of Valencia.
