A character dies inside a film. The actor that performs his role, whose name in Semblante, becomes suspect of an impossible crime: having killed himself. While the film blends with reality becoming a real thriller, Semblante will have to prove his innocence to survive and save the woman he loves.
A daring project by Pedro Cabeleira, director of this surrealist 45-minute long thriller, it is also a small homage to Oscar-winning actor James Stewart and his roles in numerous suspense movies. In Estrangement (Estranhamento), the main character becomes immersed in a sudden confusion between reality and fiction; and the audience follows, unable to solve the film’s puzzle until the very end. Estrangement also pays homage to filmmaking and the chaos that an unorganized movie, where space and time don’t follow a linear order, would entail. And this is what happens to Semblante, the famous actor accused of murder, when the order of his own life is mysteriously altered.
“Every film should have a girl and a gun”, Semblante is told by a mysterious man. Estrangement has both. And much more.
Estrangement is part of the Official Selection of the 7th edition of the International Medium-length Film Festival La Cabina that takes place in the Filmoteca de Valencia from the 6th to the 16th of November.
