The Stillness Syndrome

Spain / 2021 / 30 min / Color

In 2018, a group of filmmakers who called themselves THE MOTIONLESS embarks on an essay film about a hypothetical stillness syndrome in the Republic of Colombia. For this purpose, they invite Luis Ospina, master of the Colombian documentary, the presidential candidate Gustavo Petro, and writer Juan Gabriel Vásquez to point their way to delve into the history, geography and idiosyncrasy of Colombia, a country that, paradoxically, is not motionless at all. For unknown reasons, the project is never finished. Fifty years later, a researcher recovers the raw material of that project, and sets it up as a public presentation to publicize that hypothetical Colombian stillness syndrome at a major film festival.

His first feature-length essay film, MAP, won the Best European Documentary in Seville’s European Film Festival 2012 and was nominated as Best Documentary in the Spain Academy Awards (Goyas 2013). His second feature doc NOTES FOR A HEIST MOVIE premiered at “New Directors” section of the San Sebastian Int’l Film Festival 2018 and won the Feroz Critics Awards 2018 for Best Documentary of the year in Spain and was nominated for Best Documentary for the Goyas Academy Awards.

Siminiani alternates his more personal work with projects in the realm of investigative journalism. His true-crime series THE ASUNTA CASE for Netflix received the Magnolia Award at Shanghai International Film and TV Festival (2018). In 2019 he directed THE ALCASSER MURDERS also for Netflix. This project was one of the most controversial and critically acclaimed doc series in recent years in Spain. It was the most-watched documentary on Netflix in Spain last year.

His new project, THE STILLNESS SYNDROME, is the result of the collaboration with Colombian filmmaker and producer Jorge Caballero and it marks the return of Siminiani to the essay film.
